Yeah. Don’t ever doubt that moms know their kids. For my birthday last week, mine sent me one of these:

Kinja'd!!!

(not me)

Yeah. My 40th birthday. And my mom got me some Lego. And I couldn’t have been happier.

My daughter (just turned 4) and I started building it today. We got through the first four bags of parts in about 3 hours.

There are twelve bags of parts.

Kinja'd!!!

They really outdid themselves with this one. I spent so many days as a kid building every Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo program rocket (with stages) that I could build with the parts I had, and this... I dunno, man. The amount of thought that went into the design of this, the build progression, and the fact that it mostly uses plain old regular parts (1969 in total), I just had a smile on my face the whole time we were building it.

Kinja'd!!!

(end of bag 3)

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

More to come as the build progresses.

For my 45th bd this year my family got me the yellow submarine lego kit. Yeah, they know me well too. ;)

That rocket looks like a blast! Enjoy it! (ooh, unintentional pun!)

OMG is the 1969 pieces a reference to the 1969 Apollo 11 launch.

I bought this set yesterday (tracking it down was an ordeal) and hauled ass to get it done before leaving town today. I think my total build time was around 4 hours. I really do need to slow down when building new sets.

Was this a great set? I collect and build the architecture ones but I’m really considering breaking canon.

Also, this was a user-submitted design, which is cool as hell

Tip for slowing down: add a 4-yr-old, and tell her to follow the instructions.

Also: how FUCKING AWESOME is this?

It’s epic. The build techniques absolutely blew my mind. Like the Porsche was standard Technic fare in terms of how it was designed and laid out. But this. The whole structure and the diagonal elements with effectively a skin on top of them that lines up perfectly just blew my mind. Also the instruction book is just as cool as the Porsche one. Building nothing but Technic sets for the last little bit, classic system was quite refreshing. The way the stages attach (you’re almost there!) is really clever and super sturdy.

It’s so fucking well done. Every bit of it. I kinda can’t get over it.

My 3 and 4 year old helped me build mine, This is a great set to do with the kids, so much repetition I could have each of them build one and I’d build two. A really awesome set, and it got my boys interested in the real thing. I can’t tell you how many Saturn V launch videos we watched in the following weeks. Pretty cool. I love legos. I actually got the bucket wheel mining machine for Father’s Day from my wife... I mean my boys. ;)

This was the first set I was able to snag the day it was released. I was stoked. Normally I miss them, then have to wait a few weeks or more to get them. That damn Porsche took me a couple months to snag. Now I plug the dates into my calendar. Waiting for the lid on bus on the 17th now.

I got my dad and father in law (both total Beatles fanatics) the Yellow Submarine set for some recent holiday. Maybe it was xmas last year? I also got my dad the Lotus 7. He’s a former Caterham 7 owner.

My wife got me the Saturn 5 for my birthday this year. I’m in my 40s.

I thought about the bus. It would go perfectly with my microscale one.

The ideas sets have so much more passion I think than most of the actual sets.

It will go well with the mini and the vw bug and vw bus... I’m all out of shelf space though. The vws are still in their boxes waiting on an opening on the shelves.

I did some rearranging of my stuff for the Saturn v (I didn’t realize it was a meter tall) and my bug, bus, and f40 are now all together. Just need the mini, caterham and the London bus to complete the ones at that scale.

This set is probably my favorite so far. It was perfect for building with my two older boys. My 4yo can do most nexo and batman sets all on his own now, but the 3yo still requires some assistance so it was nice to have a set that was friendly to having him help out too. It took a while to get the rocket built, but it’s well worth the time to be able to build it with both boys. You’re right about how to slow down a build.... no need to rush though.

The mini is awesome! Can’t speak for the caterham, is still in its box too. We’ve been looking at moving for so long, I’ve held off hanging any more shelves for the past couple years. One of these days.
